We follow in the footsteps of HP Lovecraft and his visit to the Conference House in 1924

For a few years we ran a Google Blog called “Comfy Chair: A Companion Blog to Myth Ink Books.” This blog was a collection of information and background about our publications & books, and the title “Comfy Chair,” originated with a Doctor Who episode. It compiled our geeky items of interest, trips to Providence, Book Reviews, articles about Star Trek, Douglas Adams, Doctor Who, and travelogues. Click to visit the blog
We stopped updating and writing for the blog, for various reasons I will not discuss here, in 2016
We began a section called “Chasing Lovecraft,” after we began visiting sites where HP Lovecraft lived, walked and inspired his work. The first articles were of our visit to Lovecraft’s hometown of Providence, Rhode Island, then we followed that with trip reports from Salem. These articles began in 2012 and continued into 2013 where last entries concerned his visit to Staten Island, New York

Comfy Chair was an early version of what we’ve begun to do here, in a more concentrated form, to convey strange travelogues. Our Strange Meanderings began in just the written form under the banner of Comfy Chair over a decade ago. Now we actually film the stories, and share our interesting in visiting interesting locations, alongside the blog form. All of this is in part the origin story for our latest Our Strange Meanderings Vlog, entitled (You guessed it) H.P. Lovecraft’s Visit to Staten Island.

On a blustery grey afternoon I (Anthony) visited the Conference House on the southern tip of Staten Island, New York. To assist in the narrative of Lovecraft’s visit I brought along a copy of Lovecraft’s Letters From NY. In this volume Lovecraft details his visit to Staten Island to his Aunt Lillian dated September 1924. At this time Lovecraft was living with is wife, Sonia Greene, at 259 Parkside Ave in Brooklyn NY. It was not this volume that I had first encountered this letter, but in the Arkham House abridged version of his Letters. Once I learned the Arkham House volume did not have the full letters, I acquired this one edited by ST Joshi.
In this letter Lovecraft describes the state of the Conference House, the resident he spoke with, how he travelled to the area, and his thoughts on the environment.. All of which I shall leave for you to hear in the video linked below.
Lastly, in the month after Lovecraft visited the Conference House he finished his story “The Shunned House,” which is discussed in the below video.
